Swedes Worldwide is an independent and non-profit organization whose mission is to support Swedes living abroad by monitoring, informing, and influencing their interests and concerns.
On July 9, 2022, Swedes Worldwide presented a new report about the number of Swedes living abroad showing that around 700,000 Swedes are living outside Sweden. To be precise 68500 persons, which is an increase compared to the same report in 2015 when the number was 660000. According to the Swedes Worldwide report, there are Swedes living in at least 177 of the world’s approximately 200 countries. The majority live in Europe, but the USA is the country with most Swedes followed by Spain and the UK.
“We cannot verify how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected the results, but an increased uncertainty connected to health, closed borders and vaccination, and a desire to live closer to family and friends have most likely influenced the results” – says Cecilia Borglin, General Secretary of Swedes Worldwide (Svenskar i Världen)
In addition to the Report on the number of Swedes outside Sweden, 10,000 people participated in a survey by Swedes Worldwide to gain more knowledge of the lives of Swedes abroad. The result of the survey shows among others that love and climate are the main reasons for many to leave Sweden and when they are established abroad most of them appreciate the possibility to take part in other cultures but that sometimes the bureaucracy in the new country can be a bit of a problem. From the groups that participated in the survey, professionals, partners to professionals, students, and pensioners, the latest group had the lowest interest in moving back to Sweden. The Report was made in collaboration with Swedish foreign organizations abroad.
