Vasaloppet, the world’s largest cross-country ski race, will take place on March 2, 2025, marking its 103rd annual event. The race has been held every year since 1922, but its origins trace back even further. The first Vasaloppet was run in 1521 by Gustav Eriksson, who, during his flight from the Danish king, stopped in Sälen before returning to Mora to lead the uprising against the occupying forces. Gustav Eriksson eventually succeeded in uniting the realm and became Sweden’s first king, known to history as Gustav Vasa. This rich history and enduring tradition continue to make Vasaloppet a symbol of Swedish heritage and resilience.
