COP29, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan from November 11 to 22, 2024. This crucial event brings together world leaders, negotiators, and stakeholders to address pressing climate issues and advance the implementation of the Paris Agreement. Key priorities include securing new climate finance goals, strengthening climate action, and developing national climate plans to keep global warming within 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Sweden’s Sustainability Goals and Contributions
As an environmental pioneer, Sweden has set ambitious sustainability targets:
- Becoming fossil-free by 2045
- Achieving 100% renewable energy production
- Transitioning to a fossil-free transport sector by 2030
Currently, around 60% of Sweden’s national energy supply comes from renewable sources. Sweden aims to be the world’s first fossil fuel-free welfare nation while expanding its climate solutions globally.
At COP29, Sweden will showcase innovations from its business community that can accelerate the global green transition. Business Sweden leads Sweden’s official pavilion and non-negotiating delegation at the UN’s COP conference, uniting stakeholders from business, academia, and the public sector and positioning itself as a “Climate Matchmaker” to bridge implementation gaps in achieving the Paris Agreement goals.
Sweden’s Key Messages at COP29
- Urgency of climate transition and its opportunities for strengthening business competitiveness.
- Focus on global climate financing, including the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG).
- Broadening the donor base to include wealthy developing countries with high emissions.
