The 2024 Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to the Japanese organisation Nihon Hidankyo, a grassroots movement of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, known as Hibakusha.
This recognition honours Nihon Hidankyo “for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again”. Since the atomic bomb attacks of August 1945, they have worked tirelessly to raise awareness of the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons, helping to establish the powerful international norm known as “the nuclear taboo.”
The testimony of the Hibakusha stands out as a vital reminder of the need for peace and disarmament.
