Karin Degerfeldt, Sustainability Strategist, Skellefteå Municipality, Sweden

Karin will discuss how citizen engagement was key to understanding the community’s needs and describe the collaborative efforts that helped shape Skellefteå’s transformation. She will highlight the city’s functioning as an interdependent ecosystem encompassing companies, suppliers, talent, and growth opportunities. Key topics will include the impact of the city’s cultural centre on this transformation and how AI is used to better understand newcomers, optimise transport planning, and facilitate energy sharing between cars and buildings. Karin will also address challenges and potential opportunities ahead, including fostering trust among citizens during turbulent times and investing in the city’s youth.

Speaker:

  • Hanifeh Khayyeri, Vice President, RISE Research Institute of Sweden

Hanifeh will explain the concept of the AI value chain—from AI code and applications to data centres. She will discuss why most attention is focused on applications, while data centres, though a critical part of infrastructure, remain a challenge in Sweden. She will also cover how AI is supporting ESA satellite systems, biodiversity, and its role in decarbonisation through self-driving cars and autonomous container shipping.
