Stegra Revolutionises Swedish Steel Production with Minimal CO2 Emissions
Stegra, formerly known as H2 Green Steel, is at the forefront of a transformative initiative aimed at revolutionising the Swedish steel industry. As a response to the urgent need for sustainability, the company is building a new state-of-the-art steel mill in Boden, with a bold ambition to drastically reduce global carbon dioxide emissions. Currently, the steel industry is responsible for approximately eight percent of total CO2 emissions worldwide, and Stegra is determined to change this narrative. With significant backing from international banks and SEK, Stegra's innovative project seeks to achieve a remarkable 95% reduction in carbon emissions from steel production. By harnessing renewable energy generated from water and wind power, the new facility will operate sustainably while maintaining high efficiency. A key element of this groundbreaking approach involves replacing traditional coal use with green hydrogen in the steel-making process, resulting in almost zero carbon emissions, with the only by-products being water and heat. Founded in 2020, Stegra aims to lead the charge in the steel industry and inspire broader green investments across heavy industries in Sweden. The project is designed to serve as a model for sustainable practices, showcasing how innovation can play a critical role in addressing climate change.
