A conversation with Tord Magnuson on the value of mentorship
”It is amazing to watch intelligent young people grow and see them dare new things” says Swedish business executive Tord Magnuson. Parallel to his engagement in Swedish business and foundations, such as YPO and Interpeace, Tord Magnuson has a passion for mentoring young entrepreneurs. When Tord Magnuson last visited the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in the Netherlands, he shared his perspective on mentorship. Tord Magnuson expressed:
“I stay in close touch with many young people, especially from the suburbs in Stockholm. Many of them have great ideas and potential but just need someone to talk to, and a helping hand. I think helping and staying engaged is exciting and fun, and I like to make use of my network and resources.”
The first time Tord Magnuson took on the role as a mentor was with Ahmed Abdirahman, whom he accidentally met at a lunch in New York. Over the years, Tord Magnuson and Ahmed Abdirahman cultivated a close friendship marked by sharing ideas and encouragement. Today, Ahmed Abdirahman stands as a successful entrepreneur, founder of The Global Village and Järvaveckan, and a prominent activist against segregation in Sweden. As a key figure in Swedish business and a part of the royal Swedish family, Tord Magnuson happily leveraged his unique network to contribute to Ahmed Abdirahman's journey. As an example, Tord Magnuson personally invited the world-famous academic and public speaker Hans Rosling to an event Ahmed Abdirahman hosted for high school students, resulting in a fully packed auditorium. As a mentor, you can always ask your mentee how you can add value to them. Tord Magnuson emphasizes the transformative power of giving young individuals acknowledgement:
“Most people become a better version of themselves as soon as they feel recognized by others. All it takes is to meet up, listen to their ideas, introduce them to your network and help when you can. People can often achieve so much more than they think. They just need someone who believes in them.”
For Tord Magnuson, mentorship has consistently been a rewarding experience:
“It is amazing to watch intelligent young people grow and see them dare new things. All I do is help activate an energy that already exists in them. When I see the great things Ahmed has achieved, I feel very inspired.”

Swedish Chamber’s Summit Explores Business Role in Green Transition
”Businesses play a key role in the green transitions, and they need to be included in the conversations” – H.R.H. Prince Jamie de Bourbon de Parme, Climate Envoy of the Netherlands. On December 15, 2023, the Swedish Chamber of Commerce hosted its highly anticipated annual flagship event, the Sustainability & Innovation Summit, themed “Driving the Green Transition Together”. A highlight of the event was the captivating fireside talk featuring H.E. Climate Ambassador of Sweden, Mattias Frumerie, and H.R.H. Prince Jamie de Bourbon de Parme, Climate Envoy of the Netherlands. Together, they shared key takeaways and reflections from COP28, emphasizing its historic significance as the first inclusion of the private sector. Like COP28, the annual Swedish Chamber Sustainability & Innovation Summit uniquely incorporated the business perspective on the green transition, emphasizing the need for a systemic and collaborative approach. The Swedish Chamber is proud to gather such an exceptional group of politicians, business leaders, and academics to facilitate the conversation on the green transition. The moderator of the event was Andrea Orsag, Sustainability Strategy Advisor and Sustainability Expert. Orsag summarizes the following key takeaways from the Summit:
  • COP28 UN Climate Change Conference's final decision included a call to transition away from fossil fuels for the first time. Words like “phasing out” were avoided, but it did stipulate the tripling of new investments in renewable energy.
  • The energy transition is a materials transition and hence, a circular economy transition: business models need to ensure efficient use of resources, their effective circulation and retention.
  • Circularity starts at the design phase. We also need to rethink ownership and move to business models providing access to needed products and services - enabling sharing, renting, leasing and takebacks.
  • Without security, there is no sustainability and without sustainability, there is no security: Green transition needs to be just and inclusive, available to all. At this point, it’s not only about mitigation but also about adaptation to a new reality.
  • The transition is not about a specific industry or specific company, all market players need to work towards it. Sustainability needs to be an integral part of the Strategy - all jobs need to be climate jobs.
  • Here in the West, we need to continue showing that this can be done, share how, and support developing countries in their efforts through collaboration and financing. Only together can we achieve a liveable planet for all.
